Two things at work here, both related to avoiding a guilty conscience. 1) Can't allow that "not so special person" to spend their not so plentiful cash on an expensive gift for you. 2) Can't fake it with the "would-be in-laws". Neither of these has any effect on a solid relationship.
I wish I had a clever explanation for this phenomenon, but alas, I don't. Any theories?
